San Diego Wedding Cake Spotlighting Tonight’s wedding was over at the Kona Kai Resort on Shelter Island. The bride’s sister’s hired me as their San Diego wedding DJ back in 2008 so it was great to see the family again! We started off the evening with a beautiful outdoor beach ceremony overlooking the docks and bay. Guests moved inside for cocktail hour while the bride & groom stayed behind for photos.

The reception room was framed out with yellow/amber uplighting that really played up the atmosphere of warmth and candles in the space. It is difficult to see in the photo below but I thought it was fun how they had two different chairs. A patterned chair for the bride & more of a bold solid chair for the groom.

As you can see in the photo below (and at the top) the cake spotlighting I provided really placed some importance on the cake and made it stand out from across the room! You can also see in the center photo our groom is a Navy pilot so he had his dress uniform on for the reception.

Dancing was not a problem with this crowd! We played a huge variety of music tonight since there were quite a few older adults, as well as, younger kids at the wedding.

I also provided some atmospheric ambient lighting on the ceiling above. It really looked amazing hovering over the dance floor and added some fun color / movement in the photos! Excellent crowd that would not stop dancing.

Koala Cake On TV - Amazing Wedding CakesTonight’s wedding was held at the Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula, CA. This event was slightly unique because we had a film crew at the reception… The wedding was being featured on the We TV show Amazing Wedding Cakes!

Christopher Garin from “Let Them Eat Cake” designed the cake. Chris Garren was informed that our couple was looking for a koala bear cake. Why a koala you might ask? They met while both were in the Navy and strictly followed military protocol about “no signs of public affection”. So they came up with a code-word to represent their love “koala”. A competition kicks in on the show, who will create the cutest koala? The cake is complete with a eucalyptus tree with lifelike leaves placed next to the abstract cake with aboriginal decorations.

We started off with the ceremony outside on the patio overlooking the vineyards where a personal friend of the bride & groom performed the ceremony. Guest’s then moved inside the winery for cocktail hour while our couple took some photos around the property.

After the cocktail hour the doors to the Barrel Room were opened. Guests were invited into the cozy space with one uniquely large “U” shaped table for everyone. The red uplighting really added some much needed warmth & interest in the room.

It was a smaller intimate crowd this evening. We had fun. As their wedding DJ I tried to play a large variety of music tonight since there were guests of all ages. You can see that we had some fun and our groom had some fun as well :)

At the end of the wedding reception we invited all of the guests to make their way outside. We lined them up on either side of the exit doors and handed out quite a few sparklers. Add in a few matches and some cheers… We have a great photo and our couple was off!

Powerhouse Del Mar is a great San Diego wedding venue if you want an all in one ceremony and reception location right on the beach. The ceremony today was held out on the patio. We weren’t sure if the rain would hold out for our couple but we made it through the ceremony with only a few drops.

Once inside the uplighting really added some color to the space and incorporated their blue throughout the reception. A nice personal touch were the homemade  cookies by the bride & her mother are a German family holiday tradition. Historians trace these cookies back to the Julfest, a German midwinter celebration.

Our couple and many of their guests really know how to swing dance so we played quite a bit of big band and swing music tonight. We also incorporated some more current music to keep things going later on. A nice and fun winter wedding.

The Scripps Forum is one of the best modern inside and outside La Jolla wedding venues in San Diego. The view isn’t too bad either… We started off with the ceremony out on the grass facing the ocean. At the end of the ceremony our couple released two white doves as a symbol of love since the white dove chooses one mate for life.

Guests moved to the side patio for cocktail hour.  The clear acrylic tables were illuminated by uplights and were a small taste of what was waiting for them inside. We were all treated to one of the best sunsets San Diego can offer!

Our couple is truly into electronic music and nightlife. Each table was named a different nightclub they have been to in the past. They primarily hired me as their San Diego wedding DJ but I also walked them through some excellent options for lighting that quickly caught their attention. They had clear acrylic tables inside that were also illuminated with blue uplights. We then placed purple uplights around the perimeter. This provided enough light so we didn’t have to use any of the ceiling lights. The whole room gave off a warm glow and really set the tone for the rest of the evening.

MOCA San Diego Wedding CakeI love the Museum Of Contemporary Art La Jolla as a San Diego wedding venue location for a few reasons. Mostly because of the unique space, always interesting art (even though I graduated with a degree in biology/chemistry I took art all through college and consider art one of my main gifts/talents in life), and that I am only a few miles away so it makes for a short drive!

Today’s wedding consisted of a three different areas to set equipment and lighting up in. I first provided a battery powered speaker for the ceremony down at “The Wedding Bowl” (no electricity) which is located on the grass overlooking the cliffs and ocean. Amazing views! We had a violinist who played along with my music. She also played the violin at the bride’s parent’s wedding many years ago so it was a personal moment for everyone.

San Diego Wedding Bowl La Jolla Ceremony MOCA San Diego Patio Cocktail Hour MOCA San Diego Patio Cocktail Hour 2

Guests then moved to the Coast Room and Miles Terrace where I had a small set of equipment for music and 5 uplights to add some color and light once the sun went down. After cocktail hour guests went upstairs to the Axline Court for the reception. The couple’s unique wedding theme and inspiration tonight was “Indonesian spice” so there were lots of earthy colors, small woven baskets as favors, wood, and candles. I provided 16 amber uplights for this space that went extremely well with the linens, candles, and artwork currently in the museum.

Dinner was served family style which many of the guests enjoyed. It seems like this is becoming a San Diego wedding trend lately as I see it more and more often. It was something a little different that you don’t see at every wedding. After all of the important dances we kicked things off with the Hora and as you can see below every guest joined in on the fun!

Bahia San Diego Wedding CakeThe Bahia Resort is a San Diego wedding venue located on Mission Bay. The property has a few different ballrooms available, as well as, a few different locations for an outdoor ceremony. Tonight’s couple started off with their wedding ceremony outside by the pond. This area is tucked away in a garden and is fairly hidden from the main resort. After the ceremony guest’s headed up to the Mission Ballroom which is on the top floor of the main tower. The large windows provided excellent views of the water and the Sea World fireworks in the summer.

One unique wedding item tonight was the large map located at the entrance. The tables were all named after places the bride & groom had traveled to in the past. Each location was pinned and the guest’s names were all connected to that location. The flowers were also unique colors and extremely vibrant.

Bahia San Diego Wedding Ceremony Bahia San Diego Unique Wedding Idea Bahia San Diego Wedding Flowers

They hired me as their San Diego wedding DJ but I also provided quite a bit of lighting tonight. The lighting included 12 uplights and a custom gobo monogram projection. The projection of their names onto the wall really helped distract attention away from the fact that it is an airwall. The uplighting added warmth and interest to all of the columns in the ballroom. All of this really dressed up the room.

Football Themed Wedding ProgramRancho Bernardo Inn has many different locations for your San Diego wedding ceremony. Tonight’s ceremony was held over on the Valencia Lawn. There is a fountain well located near the ceremony and our couple put a box of pennies on it with a note to make a special wish for our newlyweds. The sports and football themed reception was held in the San Bernardo Ballroom. The groom’s cake was a fun football field with the couple running from the “Single” side to the “Married” side of the field. The uplighting really warmed up the room and the gobo monogram projection on the wall above the couple’s sweetheart table added some interest. You can see the before and after photos below. After the cake cutting we showed a nice 8 minute photo slide show of our bride’s mother that passed away a short time ago. It was a nice way to celebrate her life and have her be a special part of our couple’s wedding. Dancing went really well tonight. We had a little bit of a late start but they really ate it up. We were scheduled to end at 12 midnight but the bride ran up to me and wanted to extend until 1 am. At about 12:15 the staff told the bride and groom that the event had to end at 12 midnight so we closed the evening out with their last dance. Overall a great wedding!

This weekend kicked off with a wedding at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. I helped provide the ceremony music which was held just outside the ballroom on the Aragon Lawn. We moved inside the Aragon Ballroom for the cocktail hour and reception. A nice personal touch was the fact that family members made the entire cake this evening. We were all a little worried about it in the beginning because they were bringing it inside all in pieces. They assembled it and added some last minute detailing. It turned out well and was actually a fairly large cake for 200+ people. They wanted to really highlight this so I provided the cake spotlighting (photos below). Take notice of the room shots at a distance to really see how this makes the cake stand out. We also added in the uplighting to match the girl’s dresses and add some color to the walls. Dancing went well tonight. We had a late night break from the dance floor with some cheeseburgers and fries with all the toppings.

MOCA Wedding Cake with LIGHTINGTonight I was back at one of my favorite locations… The Museum Of Contemporary Art La Jolla. I enjoy creating art myself so it is always interesting to see what exhibits they have on display. We started with the ceremony outside on the patio where Christopher Tuttle did a great job officiating the wedding. Guests remained outside for the cocktail hour and then proceeded upstairs for the indoor reception. The museum currently has all white pieces in the main Axline Court lobby area that work well for a wedding since they provide a neutral backdrop for lighting and color. Tonight’s colors were light blue and an intense pink. I used 16 uplights throughout the reception room. They really added some much needed color and depth to the space. You can also view some photos of the cake spotlighting that I provide. The before and after pictures are below and the final photo with the uplighting in the background is above. It really does an excellent job of making the cake stand out in a room! You can see the before and after pictures below. One of the best things I have seen in a while were the chocolate covered strawberries at each place setting. When guests first entered the room each one had a special note on it saying:  “Life Is Unpredictable… Eat Dessert First!” I thought it was a really fun idea and who doesn’t like to eat dessert first? I played a large variety of music tonight. Guests really had a great time. They danced until the very end. We then invited everyone to make their way outside to see our couple off. Guests were given giant three foot sparklers and formed a tunnel for our bride & groom to exit through. A fun way to end the evening. Cake SpotlightingTonight’s wedding was over at the Kona Kai on Shelter Island. This wedding was a referral from a bride and groom that I provided San Diego Wedding DJ services for back in 2007. The head table and centerpieces looked great. What really made the room stand out was the draping behind the bride & groom’s table. It did a great job of hiding the wall behind. I adjusted the the uplighting so it would wash over the draping to create a dramatic atmosphere and cast a glow over the entire space. The uplighting around the room also added color to the all white walls. The cake spotlighting really made the cake stand out since it is a larger room and the cake is always place in the back corner. I helped the bride create a fun mix for the father/daughter dance tonight. All of the bride’s sisters and closest friends joined her father half way through for a dance they have been doing for quite some time. It helped to start dancing off in a fun way. Guests enjoyed themselves this evening and danced until the last song.
