El Cortez San Diego Wedding CakeToday I was near downtown at the El Cortez to provide San Diego wedding DJ and lighting services for a ceremony & reception. It was in the forecast to likely be a very rainy day here in San Diego. Our bride and groom knew this was going to be a problem for their planned outdoor ceremony so they had a tent setup outside on the El Cortez patio. The ceremony and our bride’s uncle performed ceremony which was held facing the fireplace. He was really able to add a personal touch to the couple’s stories & vows.

Our couple met in high school and one memory that was brought up during the wedding ceremony was the fact that our groom always remembers his first kiss on the cheek with her. He graduated a few years before her & went on to college at USD. During this time they broke up for a while & moved on their lives. They both went their separate ways during college. Seven years went by… They didn’t totally lose touch during this time because when they were both in San Diego during holidays and summer they had a similar group of old friends. Our bride eventually moved back to San Diego. Once back they began to spend more time together and both realized they felt a little differently towards each other. They were a little older, wiser, more understanding, & slightly more mature. They learned how to value each other and eventually decided to get engaged & married. The bride’s uncle ended the ceremony with a great saying: “It only takes a few minutes to marry the one you love but it takes a lifetime to learn how to love the one you marry.”

Once inside the reception room our couple used lots of gold linens, candles, and manzanita branch centerpieces to complete their fall themed wedding. As a unique wedding favor our bride and groom decided to give each guest a personalized bottle of champagne. Our couple hired me as their San Diego wedding DJ but they also knew that they wanted to hire me to provide quite a bit of lighting for the reception ballroom inside the El Cortez. Our couple felt that the reception room tends to be on the darker side of things so it needed quite a bit of lighting to really make it look good. We were originally going to also add some lighting to the outside patio space and on the fireplace but because of the rain we had to pull everything inside. I used 20 uplights in various fall themed colors, cake spotlighting, and a gobo monogram projected down onto the dance floor to give the room a really warm and interesting look.

After the meal we kicked things off with the toasts. Our bride and groom made a very personal slide show that I projected onto an 8 foot screen as their “thank you” to family & friends. We then moved into the first dance and opened up the dance floor. Guests were a little slow to start dancing early on in the evening but after the cake they really warmed up and let loose. Everyone ended up having a great time.

The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) is a modern San Diego wedding venue tucked within Balboa Park. One nice thing about this space is that there are many options nearby for an outdoor ceremony in the park. Our couple hired me as their San Diego wedding DJ for the reception but also decided to have their ceremony in the Casa Del Prado courtyard. This allowed for a semi-private ceremony in a very busy place. There is no electricity in the area so I had to use a battery powered system for music & microphones. The bride’s uncle performed the ceremony. He was extremely nervous in the beginning but ended up doing a nice job for them and made the ceremony personal.

After the ceremony guests headed out of the courtyard over to the cocktail hour located on the East Lawn in front of the Botanical Gardens building. This lawn area is also next to the reflecting pond which makes for a scenic backdrop.  Balboa Park does not allow any electrical powered amplification so I once again had to use a battery operated sound system in the cocktail hour area.

Balboa Park Wedding Venue Unique Wedding Favors African Scarves San Diego Wedding Escort Cards

Our couple lives in Tanzania so of course there was an African theme throughout the entire wedding reception. This theme was evident in the personalized table runners & linens that they had hand made in Africa. An artist they met in Africa designed the beaded table number card holders. For unique wedding favors they gave out packets of spices from the Zanzibar region and also colorful handmade Zanzibari scarfs for all of the women. They brought these back from Dar Es Salaam & Zanzibar’s Stonetown. You can see the handmade scarves displayed on the hand railing at the entrance to the museum.

Instead of a traditional wedding cake our couple decided to have a variety of different flavored cupcakes with a smaller cake on top for the two of them to cut. Check out the “mustachio” cupcakes! These were a white chocolate pistachio cake with pistachio butter cream and of course different shaped mustaches to top them all off.

The museum is an all white space so you really need to bring in some lighting to warm things up and create more of a wedding environment. I provided 10 red uplights around the reception gallery that added some necessary color.

This is probably my most musically unique wedding this year. They hired me as their San Diego wedding DJ over the phone since they were planning from a distance. Once they arrived in San Diego a few weeks before the wedding our couple gave me lots of DJ friendly African music that they brought back with them. We all knew that typically (American) wedding guests will only dance to songs they have heard many time times before so all of us were not sure if their guests would dance to this music since it was unfamiliar to most of them. We talked it over and thought we would test out the waters that night and see what happens. I listened to and categorized all of this music in advance. This allowed me sort the music by beats per minute and to seamlessly mix in their African songs in between some mainstream dance music and popular American favorites. It was sort of a back and forth between the styles all night. They actually ate it up and had a great time. I honestly think the seamless beat mixing really helped keep that momentum going from a familiar song into an unfamiliar song and then back to something familiar again. Essentially I didn’t give them a chance to have a “conscious moment” to think: What song is this? Do I like this song? Do I want to dance to this song? It just happens. This was a really fun and unique wedding that I will definitely remember.

Scripps Forum Wedding Cake Spotlighting Our couple tonight hired me as their San Diego wedding DJ at the Scripps Seaside Forum which is an amazing wedding venue located in La Jolla right on the water.

We started off with the ceremony outside on the grass at an angle facing the palm trees and beach. Once the wedding ceremony was done guests moved over to the patio and lawn area for cocktail hour. The bar was open… The couples specialty cocktail was named after a play on their last name (Whelan) called the “Peach Whelinni”.

A nice assortment of tray passed appetizers were served that included: Seared Beef- with sweet potatoes and pomegranate reduction, Seared Ahi on Wonton, Brie Pops, Grilled Vegetable Kabobs, and Chicken Picatta Puffs.

The draped patio space with a center hanging chandelier along with the all white leather bar looked great. The guest’s name cards were displayed in a playful way tucked inside of flowers that almost looked like some sort of dessert.

After cocktail hour the doors were opened to the reception space. The tables really stood out with the rich blue linens and the bright contracting orange floral centerpieces that were lit from below. You can also see in the photo below that the back of the Scripps Forum was draped with flowing white fabric and the room was completed with a custom seamless white dance floor.

Tonight they hired me as their San Diego wedding DJ but they knew that they were interested in my San Diego wedding lighting services as well. The Scripps Forum is one of my favorite places to provide lighting for. I have done so many different things in this space and each wedding has had a totally different look and feel. I used the orange uplighting inside and outside to add lots of warmth and color. Spotlighting the cake also allowed us to really turn down the lights for an intimate atmosphere but still allowed the cake to stand out at a distance.

San Diego wedding DJ highlights from a ceremony and reception held at Park Manor Suites Hotel located near downtown. We started off the evening with the couples wedding ceremony held outside on the patio overlooking Balboa Park & the city. One unique wedding item was instead of having a guest book our couple had a wooden bench that each guest was able to write on and sign. They plan on putting this bench in the entryway of their new home.

After dinner we kicked off dancing. We didn’t have too much time to work with at this point so as their San Diego wedding DJ I had to really try to fit as many songs in as I could in a short period of time. I mixed in and out of songs much faster than I normally would to really get a huge variety in there and play as many hits as possible. They definitely made the most of it! Dancing was non stop until we closed things out with our couple’s last dance.

Powerhouse Del Mar is a great San Diego wedding venue if you want an all in one ceremony and reception location right on the beach. The ceremony today was held out on the patio. We weren’t sure if the rain would hold out for our couple but we made it through the ceremony with only a few drops.

Once inside the uplighting really added some color to the space and incorporated their blue throughout the reception. A nice personal touch were the homemade  cookies by the bride & her mother are a German family holiday tradition. Historians trace these cookies back to the Julfest, a German midwinter celebration.

MOCA San Diego Wedding CakeI love the Museum Of Contemporary Art La Jolla as a San Diego wedding venue location for a few reasons. Mostly because of the unique space, always interesting art (even though I graduated with a degree in biology/chemistry I took art all through college and consider art one of my main gifts/talents in life), and that I am only a few miles away so it makes for a short drive!

Today’s wedding consisted of a three different areas to set equipment and lighting up in. I first provided a battery powered speaker for the ceremony down at “The Wedding Bowl” (no electricity) which is located on the grass overlooking the cliffs and ocean. Amazing views! We had a violinist who played along with my music. She also played the violin at the bride’s parent’s wedding many years ago so it was a personal moment for everyone.

San Diego Wedding Bowl La Jolla Ceremony MOCA San Diego Patio Cocktail Hour MOCA San Diego Patio Cocktail Hour 2

Guests then moved to the Coast Room and Miles Terrace where I had a small set of equipment for music and 5 uplights to add some color and light once the sun went down. After cocktail hour guests went upstairs to the Axline Court for the reception. The couple’s unique wedding theme and inspiration tonight was “Indonesian spice” so there were lots of earthy colors, small woven baskets as favors, wood, and candles. I provided 16 amber uplights for this space that went extremely well with the linens, candles, and artwork currently in the museum.

Dinner was served family style which many of the guests enjoyed. It seems like this is becoming a San Diego wedding trend lately as I see it more and more often. It was something a little different that you don’t see at every wedding. After all of the important dances we kicked things off with the Hora and as you can see below every guest joined in on the fun!

L'Auberge Del Mar Wedding CakeL’Auberge Del Mar is a perfect location for weddings because of the multiple outdoor terraces and patios, as well as, the indoor Platinum Ballroom. The plan was to have the cocktail hour outside on the Sunset Terrace and the dinner up on the top Pacific Terrace. The weather today was very stormy with off and on rain so we had to make a last minute decision to pull everything inside. About 15 minutes before start time the rain stopped so we were able to hold the cocktail hour out on the deck but dinner had to remain inside because everything was already set. Our bride really wanted to have her first dance outside so I set up a separate speaker up top and they danced just as the sun was going down.

After their first dance guests moved downstairs to the ballroom for dinner. One fun item that was included with each guest’s wedding favor was an individually wrapped pack of sparklers (to be used at the end of the evening). During dinner the vendors were all talking. Years ago I was the DJ for both the photographer’s wedding, as well as, the videographer’s wedding so during dinner we were all talking. We found out that they both got married 7 years ago in 2003… both in July… and better yet… that their weddings were one week apart from each other!

This evening’s wedding was at the Bahia Hotel aboard the William D. Evans Boat. Before guests boarded the boat they were treated to a ceremony on the sand out near the edge of the bay. A fun surprise gift was the “Honeymoon For Two Sand Bucket” placed out by the ceremony area complete with a honeymoon to Cabo San Lucas, blow up fish, two towels, hats, flip-flops, etc.

After the ceremony cocktail hour was held down on the lower level of the boat. The decor of the boat really sets the tone for the wedding on the water. Everything has an authentic 19th century look and feel to it including the bar areas on both decks. Once cocktail hour was over guests then went upstairs for toasts and dinner. The stained glass ceiling is always an unexpected surprise for guests.

After the meal everyone moved back downstairs for the rest of the evening. We started off with our couple’s first dance, father/daughter dance, & mother/son dance. Once these were complete we then turned up the volume & let them loose. A few guests even grabbed the life vests and turned them into some sort of dance costume. I’m not sure I fully understood it but nobody else did either! Good times out on the water.

Omni San Diego Wedding Cake Omni San Diego Wedding Cake TopperTonight was a large 225 person Filipino wedding in downtown San Diego at the Omni Hotel. The referral trail is long on this one… First off this couple hired me to be their San Diego wedding DJ based on a referral from a wedding that the bride & groom attended in 2008. That wedding was a referral from a wedding I DJ’d back in August of 2001 at the US Grant. The 2001 wedding was a referral from a previous wedding that is no longer in my computer system which means it was sometime back in 1995 to 1999. It always amazes me to look back at how each couple finds me. I just sent an indirect “Thank You” to the 2001 couple.

The cocktail hour tonight was held just outside the ballroom. Once we opened the ballroom doors guests made their way to their seats to find a nice bottle of sake wrapped up as their wedding favor. We started off the evening with the huge grand entrance of 42 people! I put in some time practicing to make sure I pronounced all the unique names correctly. After our couple entered we went directly into their first dance. Toasts were held after the meal (with sake service) and were followed by the father/daughter, as well as, the mother/son dances. We kicked off dancing and the dance floor was full. After about 20-30 minutes guests were naturally wanting a break so we slowed things down and showed the couples slide show which the NR3 videographers added footage from the ceremony and reception filmed just minutes earlier. We then went into the money dance which is a well-loved tradition at Filipino weddings which represents the wish that good fortune is “rained” upon them. We finished off the events with the cake cutting and the bouquet/garter toss. The rest of the evening was open for dancing. I played a large variety of music including all the major dance hits, some Cha-Cha, and a few songs from Lea Salonga (see below). Dancing went well for the rest of the evening. The lighting helped add some color to the walls and bring more purple into the room. I also projected a custom gobo monogram image down onto the dance floor that added a personal feel to the space.

Lea Salonga at Omni Wedding 8-28-10Lea Salonga is a great singer and actress in the Philippines. She has appeared in “Miss Saigon” on Broadway, as well as, the voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin. It was Filipino Cultural Night at Petco Park and Lea sang the National Anthem during the Padres game (the groom works for the Padres and helped line this up). In the photo to the left you can see Lea Salonga with our couple.
