Museum Of Contemporary Art La Jolla Wedding CakeI am back at the Museum Of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, CA. to provide sound for the ceremony, wedding DJ services, and lighting throughout the museum. The art is constantly changing and is always an interesting backdrop. The art that was up for this wedding almost seemed like they selected it for this wedding. The large lady with sunglasses looked great behind our couple’s head table.

There were many personal touches to this wedding. One of their friends designed the invitations, the bride’s brother recorded a song which we were able to play during dinner (which was a total surprise for him), another friend made their cake, and yet another made cupcakes.

The reception area is mostly a blank canvas consisting of white walls and white/grey flooring. This is an excellent opportunity to add in lots of lighting to increase the drama and incorporate the individual colors of the wedding into the space. Tonight I provided 16 uplights and also spotlighted the cake.

I helped our couple create a custom first dance by increasing the speed of the song to fit their dance. I also cut portions out and joined the segments together to reduce the overall length down to a comfortable two and a half minutes. I wasn’t too sure which way this wedding was going to go when it came to dancing. I was truly surprised at how wild the group was. It turned out to be a blast and they really had a great time! A final sparkler exit to help see our couple off…

MOCA San Diego Wedding CakeI love the Museum Of Contemporary Art La Jolla as a San Diego wedding venue location for a few reasons. Mostly because of the unique space, always interesting art (even though I graduated with a degree in biology/chemistry I took art all through college and consider art one of my main gifts/talents in life), and that I am only a few miles away so it makes for a short drive!

Today’s wedding consisted of a three different areas to set equipment and lighting up in. I first provided a battery powered speaker for the ceremony down at “The Wedding Bowl” (no electricity) which is located on the grass overlooking the cliffs and ocean. Amazing views! We had a violinist who played along with my music. She also played the violin at the bride’s parent’s wedding many years ago so it was a personal moment for everyone.

Guests then moved to the Coast Room and Miles Terrace where I had a small set of equipment for music and 5 uplights to add some color and light once the sun went down. After cocktail hour guests went upstairs to the Axline Court for the reception. The couple’s unique wedding theme and inspiration tonight was “Indonesian spice” so there were lots of earthy colors, small woven baskets as favors, wood, and candles. I provided 16 amber uplights for this space that went extremely well with the linens, candles, and artwork currently in the museum.

Dinner was served family style which many of the guests enjoyed. It seems like this is becoming a San Diego wedding trend lately as I see it more and more often. It was something a little different that you don’t see at every wedding. After all of the important dances we kicked things off with the Hora and as you can see below every guest joined in on the fun!

Dancing continued from there for the rest of the night. We took a small break for cake cutting where small (delicious) cupcakes were passed out. We played a huge assortment of dance music for the rest of the evening. The dance floor was packed and everyone had a great time (see photos below)!

MOCA Wedding Cake with LIGHTINGTonight I was back at one of my favorite locations… The Museum Of Contemporary Art La Jolla. I enjoy creating art myself so it is always interesting to see what exhibits they have on display. We started with the ceremony outside on the patio where Christopher Tuttle did a great job officiating the wedding. Guests remained outside for the cocktail hour and then proceeded upstairs for the indoor reception. The museum currently has all white pieces in the main Axline Court lobby area that work well for a wedding since they provide a neutral backdrop for lighting and color. Tonight’s colors were light blue and an intense pink. I used 16 uplights throughout the reception room. They really added some much needed color and depth to the space. You can also view some photos of the cake spotlighting that I provide. The before and after pictures are below and the final photo with the uplighting in the background is above. It really does an excellent job of making the cake stand out in a room! You can see the before and after pictures below. One of the best things I have seen in a while were the chocolate covered strawberries at each place setting. When guests first entered the room each one had a special note on it saying:  “Life Is Unpredictable… Eat Dessert First!” I thought it was a really fun idea and who doesn’t like to eat dessert first? I played a large variety of music tonight. Guests really had a great time. They danced until the very end. We then invited everyone to make their way outside to see our couple off. Guests were given giant three foot sparklers and formed a tunnel for our bride & groom to exit through. A fun way to end the evening. MOCA Wedding CakeThe Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla is always one of my favorite places to work at mainly because it is an interesting space and I have always been into modern art (not to mention the lighting possibilities!) We had the ceremony outside on the patio with my favorite Minister Jerry Bryant this evening. Cocktail hour was held downstairs in the Coast Room. Guests then moved upstairs for the reception where Guiseppe Catering was busy with three excellent food stations. It was perfect timing because it was just getting dark and all the uplighting that I had done in the room was beginning to come to life. Look at the before and after pictures below to really get a great idea of what lighting can do for any reception space! They had a cool lounge area back by the artwork that Haydee from Concepts Event Design provided. John from Aquario Studio Photography documented the evening on film. I am interested to get some of his photos of the lighting in the room since my small camera doesn’t really do these photos justice. Organic Elements did some minimal floral centerpieces that fit well in the modern space. We kicked off dancing with a slightly older music set to make sure all of the family members and family friends were happy. Once we cut the cake a little later we kicked things into high gear. I played more current music and mostly club remixes for the rest of the night. They seemed conservative early on in the evening but got pretty wild the last hour. Excellent well rounded wedding.

Extras Provided: 19 custom colored uplights, slide show projection equipment
