Temecula Winery Wedding CakeAfter the hour drive up to Temecula I arrived at a private winery estate for tonight’s wedding. It is always interesting to follow the “referral trail” to find out where clients get your information. This wedding was a referral from a 2007 wedding… which was a referral from a 2002 wedding… which was a referral from a 1999 wedding! So basically this wedding is a direct result of a wedding I did over 11 years ago. It is always fun to keep track of these sort of things to see the progress you make over the years. The couple’s house located at the top of the hill overlooking their vineyards was amazing. We held the ceremony out front on the lawn. Cocktail hour moved around back to the pool area. Dinner was held inside the tent. This wedding was for a long time figure within the Billabong surf company. Many of the top surfboard shapers were in attendance tonight including: John Carper, Terry Martin, Pat Taylor (Best Man), and Rich “Toby” Pavel. Inside the tent the groom paid tribute to these shapers with a display of their work along with some background bio information. Dancing went extremely well tonight even with a longer 7 hour event. They really enjoyed family and friends who kept it going until the end. An excellent Temecula Winery Wedding Reception!

Bride SocksAnother weekday wedding! Tonight’s Wednesday wedding was held over at The Thursday Club in Point Loma. As guests arrived they were greeted outside by an enormous pink flamingo and a spring fairy. One of the most unique and cool things I have seen! You almost don’t really know what to say… The weather has been crazy the last few days so we had to make a decision to pull the ceremony inside at the last minute. The Thursday Club has an excellent outdoor space for ceremonies but the indoor space we used still has a view that nobody can deny! We were lucky enough to have some nice pockets of weather so they could sneak outside for photos. A few unique items included the custom made poker chips (since the groom likes poker) with each person’s name placed on the dinner plate to designate their seat, as well as, the fact that our bride actually wore her grandmother’s wedding dress! The style fit our bride & groom’s personality perfectly. I made a special announcement about her dress after the toasts and it was a nice personal moment between our bride and her grandmother. I used eight orange uplights that really added color to the white walls and highlighted some of the architecture on the stage. The little flower girls learned a dance before the wedding so they decided to get out there with all the other bridesmaids and perform! Dancing went really well tonight (especially for a Wednesday night). They kept it going until the end when our bride and groom exited to a tunnel of sparklers. A fun way to send them off.

W Hotel San Diego Wedding TreeTonight was a rare Thursday night wedding downtown at the W Hotel San Diego. The ceremony and reception were scheduled to be held outside at their “beach” area (with a sand dance floor, fire pits, cabanas, etc.) but two days before the wedding it burnt down. We went into panic mode looking at options to move the venue if they still wanted an outside wedding. The W Hotel offered to close down the majority of their modern lounge style restaurant “RICE” and move the event inside. I think it actually turned out to be a better location because it was a cold evening in San Diego. Guests might not have stayed as long if they were outside.

I was hired to perform as their San Diego wedding DJ, as well as, provide music for the ceremony. The ceremony was held at the top of the stairs with guests gathered around. The candles on the back wall made for a nice backdrop. A great quote from the pastor during the ceremony: “The grass isn’t greener on the other side, it is greener where it gets the most water”. Did you water your relationship today?

Our couple wanted a fun, relaxed, playful wedding. There were a few elements that added to this atmosphere: At the entrance there was a tree with colorful bells on it for the guests to take to be used at the end of the ceremony as the exited. We projected a custom butterfly gobo image onto the ceiling. Their “cake” was actually one of their favorite desserts: a huge cookie. They had a “sexy french fry bar” with various dips and sauces. I used the water effect lights to fill the entire ceiling with moving and rippling water. I kept this set to a nice white light early on until dancing kicked in. Once things got going I switched them over to change color throughout the evening. They only had about 35 guests but they really had an excellent time. I played for about an extra half hour because I was also having a great time and they just kept going…

Shadowridge Country Club Wedding DJ - CakeIt has been a while since I last provided San Diego wedding DJ services at Shadowridge Country Club. I took a look and my last wedding there was over eight years ago back in 2002. Tonight’s couple hired me as their San Diego wedding DJ for the ceremony and reception from a referral. The referral was actually from my bride who had her wedding yesterday. Shadowridge Country Club provides a shuttle that guests board at the Country Club that takes them to and from the ceremony site.  The ceremony was held out in the middle of the golf course tucked away in a nice secluded area. Once guests were transported back the cocktail hour and dinner reception were held inside the ballroom with a great view of the golf course. The brides loves pink so naturally her color choice for the wedding was… pink. The tall centerpieces had touches of varying shades of pink that coordinated with the napkins and linens. One nice moment happened during the father and daughter dance. Half way through the song I invited the bride’s grandfather out to join her for the second half of the song. He really enjoyed being a part of her special day. We were ending at 9pm since it was a Sunday so we only had about an hour of dance music to work with. Once we kicked into dancing guests were ready to get things going. Dancing continued until the couples last dance.  Guests wanted a few more songs but we had to wrap things up since the Country Club needed to begin cleaning the ballroom for an event the next day. Excellent Sunday evening wedding.

Bali Hai Wedding Blue DressTonight we were over at the newly remodeled Bali Hai for a great wedding. The new remodel looks great and really updates the look and feel of the location. It makes the room seem twice as large as it used to. The ceremony was held off to the side of the restaurant facing the San Diego bay and the downtown skyline. A few interesting and fun elements to this wedding included: the groom walking into the ceremony to an instrumental version of the song: “The Final Countdown” which got a laugh out of quite a few people, the bride wore a very unique grey-ish blue wedding dress that really stood out from the “norm”, the groom does custom tile and stone work so the groom’s cake had blue waves made out of small square sugar tiles like a mosaic, root beer floats were served for dessert, the couple is really into tandem bicycles so they had their old-school tandem outside on display and I projected a custom image of a tandem bicycle down onto the dance floor, for some unknown reason a group of younger guests changed into disco style clothes during open dancing and surprised everyone on the dance floor with their stylish moves, the bride’s father is a technical genius so he put together a full on photo booth with props and backdrop. Each guest was able to take home printed photo booth style photos from the evening. The uplights around the room added some color to the walls and went well with the bride’s bouquet.

Admiral Baker Clubhouse - Wedding CakeThis evening’s wedding was held at the Admiral Baker Clubhouse and golf course. I started off with providing the ceremony music and microphones outside on the patio. After the ceremony guests moved to the other end of the patio for the cocktail hour with a great view of the golf course. Once inside the ballroom I projected a slide show that they created. It was a nice way to start off the reception. I then announced our newly married couple into the room. They went to their sweetheart table and I invited their best man and maid of honor up to start off the toasts. After the meal dancing began with their first dance to: “Bless The Broken Road” – Rascal Flatts. We cut the cake after about 45 minutes of solid dancing. They had one of the most unique cake knife and server sets I have seen yet. It was an organic shaped set by Nambé and can be seen in the picture below. Tonight was another amazing night on the dance floor. Sometimes a Sunday night wedding will not have the same type of party atmosphere as a Saturday night wedding. This definitely was not the case with this group. They kept it going until 10pm ending time. They had a blast singing along with the last dance song our couple picked out: “Bohemian Rhapsody” – Queen. It was one of the best “last dances” I’ve seen at a wedding.

Another great seven hour wedding down at the Omni Hotel San Diego tonight! We started off with the ceremony on the outdoor Palm Terrace at 5:00pm which is tented for the winter to keep out the cold. Guests moved down to the foyer for cocktail hour from 5:30 until 7:00pm. The ballroom doors opened and we kicked things off with their first dance followed by a few nice toasts. I provided a second microphone for a translator since the bride’s family was from Brazil and her dad only spoke Portuguese. Dinner was then served from 7:30pm until about 9:00pm. The rest of the evening was open for dancing and fun. After about 30-45 minutes of dancing we completed a few last events which included the cake cutting and bouquet toss. At about 10:00pm the bride and groom broke out with a large box of Brazilian Carnival themed party favors that included hats, glasses, and feather boas. I am usually not a big fan of these sort of “props” but this was done in a really fun way and the guests actually loved it. I don’t think it hurt that I played some Brazilian music to enhance the effect. We closed out the night with some great dance music and ended with their last dance at 11:30pm. They demanded “one more song” so I played one last Brazilian song to really close it out. This was a really fun carefree group.

Today I headed down to the Sheraton Harbor Island near the San Diego airport to provide ceremony and reception DJ services for William and Brenda’s wedding. The weather has been really crazy lately and it was scheduled to rain all day. Our couple decided to move the ceremony inside to be on the safe side. We held the ceremony in one room, guests then moved to the foyer for the cocktail hour (they opted not to use the outdoor patio since it was raining), and later were invited into the Catalina Ballroom for the reception. The room looked good with matching linens and chair covers. The centerpieces added some need interest and height. This was a slightly longer event than most (totaling 7 hours of DJ time) so I wasn’t sure how they were going to last. It wasn’t a crazy group but they danced and enjoyed the evening. It turned out to be a fun relaxed group that stayed until the very end. Jason Taylor from Taylor Films captured some excellent video throughout the evening. Here is a link to his site: San Diego Wedding Videographer. I will try to post a link to some video highlights when it becomes available…

This morning I was over at the Oceanview Room in Pt. Loma for an early Saturday wedding. I helped provide the ceremony music and microphones out on the grass at 10am with a beautiful view of the San Diego Bay. If you are at a park or location that requires you to pick up your flower petals from the ceremony to avoid a charge a great idea is to have a contest for all the kids at your wedding. We made an announcement after the ceremony that all the kids who helped pick up the petals and put them in the bag would get a prize. The bride had some prize bags with a few toys/gifts in them for the coordinator to hand out as they threw away their petals. Easiest and fastest way to get the job done (and keeps the kids busy)! You never know how a day wedding will turn out when it comes to dancing. Most go really well but every now and then you get a group that is just not in that same nighttime party mode and they just want to relax. This wedding was the best of both worlds. People loved the view and the sunshine but there was a fair amount of dancing throughout the afternoon.

I was over at the Town & Country Resort for a Sunday wedding today. I provided sound for the outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour. We then moved inside the ballroom for the reception. It was funny because they also had an ice sculpture which you don’t see at every wedding (last night’s wedding had an ice sculpture martini luge). I added some colored lighting to the ice sculpture which really made it stand out from across the room. Dancing was fairly consistent throughout the evening considering it was a Sunday night wedding. The lighting looked amazing in the room and really enhanced the atmosphere. It can really hide certain elements and bring out items you want to highlight. Tonight was a perfect example of that. I provided a custom monogram that was projected down onto the dance floor and 7 uplights around the room.

Extras Provided: 7 Uplights, Custom Monogram Projection
